South Dakota recently enacted a SAVE Act–style measure requiring proof of citizenship for new voter registrations, set to take effect ahead of the June 2 primary.

Among other provisions, one of the most significant aspects is that current registered voters do not need to take any action, while new registrations will require proof of citizenship.

Florida has taken similar steps, using verification systems and documentation requirements.

“Today I signed the election integrity bill, also known as the Florida SAVE Act. This legislation strengthens the security, transparency, and reliability of Florida’s election system. In Florida, we will always stand up for election integrity," DeSantis said.

While federal proposals like the SAVE Act continue to be debated - along with voter roll verification and mail-in ballot processes - states are moving forward.
