Curing the Ballot Curing Process...

Hi, Friend!

Do you know what ballot curing is? Are you aware of your local jurisdiction’s methods to doing so?

Quick Ballot Curing 101: Ballot curing is the process of fixing issues with a voter's mail-in or provisional ballot so it can be counted. When a ballot has a problem—like a missing signature, mismatched signature, or incomplete information—election officials (should) notify the voter. Depending on deadlines, varying rules by state, and if the voter has been informed in time, the voter then has a chance to correct the issue, usually by providing a signature, ID, or other required details. This ensures more valid votes are counted.

During the 2024 cycle, I learned that there was a massive volunteer on-the-ground effort put on by another group in Maricopa County, AZ to cure as many ballots as possible. The problem was…this effort started towards the end of the week before the following week’s deadline (and with county offices generally being closed on weekends) even if the voters were notified by the volunteers, they likely would not have had sufficient time to effectively cure their ballots.

I want to be clear: the deadline issue was not the group’s fault—they had learned too late that thousands of voters had not been successfully contacted and the voters were therefore unaware that their ballots even needed to be cured. I am also unsure if the county tried to contact the voters, but nevertheless, literally thousands of valid votes were more than likely left uncounted due to the voters being (a) unaware and (b) underprepared.

This is where you come in! Right now is the perfect time to plan ahead for the midterms, and while I sound like a broken record, we here at TTV cannot express that there is always work that needs to be done.

What you can do right now:

  • Learn your state and local ballot curing methods and regulations.
  • Find out specific information such as deadlines, which ballots are eligible for curing, and how a voter is to be contacted.
  • Identify “holes” in the process. For example, does your locality only contact voters via mail? Would that delay a voter being contacted?
  • Reach out to your local election administrator and advocate for more efficient, common-sense solutions.
  • Does your state offer mail-in ballot tracking? Check out Scan. Check. Protect., click on your state, and find out! Whether you track it online or you have to call your locality to confirm if it’s been received, just make sure you know where it is.
  • Spread the word. Build your own local election integrity group in your community, and train others!

By volunteering your time on these simple steps above, you will make a difference in time for 2026. Never give up, and know that we are walking right alongside you!
