Stacey Abrams Says Voter Verification is Voter 'Suppression,' Attacks True the Vote

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams appeared on CNN this week to discuss the Georgia special election. Speaking with anchor Jim Sciutto, Abrams said that Republicans can't win without suppressing the vote.

Abrams singled out True the Vote in order to make her claims.

"Republicans do not know how to win without voter suppression as one of their tools," Abrams claimed. "That's why we see True the Vote down here in Georgia challenging 364,000 voters nine days, eight days before the election. Because voter suppression is their modus operandi."

Abrams, like her sister Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner, is simply wrong. True the Vote's efforts to educate and empower citizens to ensure the integrity of their elections is the opposite of voter suppression. And the challenges are a functional and necessary means of ensuring the strength and continuity of representative government.

On Fox News, former U.S. Representative from South Carolina Trey Gowdy was quick to correct Abrams, after playing the clip while guest hosting for Sean Hannity.

"Democrats are right to be worried, but not about voter suppression," said Gowdy. "Voter education, maybe. But not voter suppression."
