It’s pretty much like jaywalking," admited former Breathitt County magistrate candidate Michael Salyers, who is serving time in jail for buying votes in his 2010 race. Salyers was given $500 and ended up buying about 10 votes. He would meet people seeking to sell their votes in the back room of a local store. "They would go into the machine and cast their vote...They were supposed to vote for me. They would come back to me and I would pay them for going to vote. The three, who ran as a slate, were accused of buying lists of mail-in voters from two U.S. postal workers in Mission in July, which they used to visit voters’ homes and either assist them in filling out the ballots or fill them out without the voters’ consent. An investigation conducted by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office revealed that Pearson, Wooten, Hicks and Griffin illegally provided assistance to voters who were not physically disabled or illiterate.
