Colon, pleaded* guilty to election fraud in July 2011, admitting he submitted messenger ballots on behalf of voters in the Essex County-based 29th District without their knowledge. In January 2012, state Superior Court Judge Thomas Sumners Jr. sentenced Colon to five years probation. The Attorney General's Office sought three years in prison, consistent with a plea bargain that had been struck, and the appellate court agreed, saying the crime required Colon to serve prison time.
