West Virginia Alvin Ray Porter, Jr. (former Logan police chief) M 2004-05 Democrat Primary D Vote Buying Alvin Ray Porter, Jr. was reportedly involved in a scandal during the 2004 Democratic party primary to bribe voters. Indicted with others for a conspiracy to control county government in Lincoln County by buying votes, keeping some supporters’ property taxes low, controlling county and state government jobs and rewarding supporters by ensuring their roads were repaired. Charged with 4 counts of influencing absentee ballot by payment of money. Pleaded guilty. He was reportedly securing votes for Gary Clark, the Republican candidate for sheriff. West Virginia Greg Stowers (former Lincoln County Circuit Clerk, member of the state Democratic Executive Committee, son of longtime Lincoln County Democratic chairman Wylie Stowers and the brother of Lyle Stowers, vice chairman of the state Democratic Executive Committee) M 2004-05 Democrat Primary D Vote Buying Greg Stowers (former Lincoln County Circuit Clerk, member of the state Democratic Executive Committee, son of longtime Lincoln County Democratic chairman Wylie Stowers and the brother of Lyle Stowers, vice chairman of the state Democratic Executive Committee) pleaded* guilty to a federal vote-buying charge, admitting to distributing $7,000 to be used to influence voters during the May 2004 primary election, after being indicted with others for a conspiracy to control county government in Lincoln County by buying votes, keeping some supporters’ property taxes low, controlling county and state government jobs and rewarding supporters by ensuring their roads were repaired. Agreed to cooperate with authorities and testify against others. Agreed to not participate in politics for at least 10 years. Kentucky J.C. Lawson M Vote buying J.C. Lawson, a convicted marijuana and cocaine dealer, explained the process of buying votes. He testified that he helped win elections by giving candidates "voters and people and money." "Where did that money come from?" U.S. Assistant Attorney Stephen C. Smith asked. "From drug dealing I made," Lawson testified. He said he gave the sheriff about $20,000 for his race, in exchange for protection. Tennessee Jo Ann Cronan F 2014-08 General 2014-10 Vote buying 6 6 Jo Ann Cronan was indicted on six counts of voter fraud related to the August 2014 general election in Polk County, Tennessee. District Attorney General Stephen D. Crump charged Cronan with paying individuals for their vote in violation of state law. West Virginia Wandell “Rocky” Adkins Toney “Zeke” Dingess M 2004-05 Democrat Primary D Vote Buying Wandell “Rocky” Adkins admitted buying votes during the 2004 primary election. Dingess said he carried more than $5,000 for Rocky Adkins.
