Lopez registered to vote using an office address in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles although he lived with his family in Orange County. He also cast an illegal ballot from Los Angeles in the 2008 presidential primary. In 1996, the Latino activist registered new voters in the Orange County congressional district that very narrowly went for Loretta Sanchez over incumbent Bob Dornan.
