In light of the 2020 Presidential Election Cycle, NPR released an article in mid-July highlighting the risk of fraud inherent to a vote by mail system. Hundreds of thousands of ballots go uncounted or are rejected each year, which could change the outcome of a close election. The analysis found many states simply do not have the capability of handling a presidential election by mail. Ballot harvesting, voter impersonation, and widespread election tampering from foreign powers is a likelihood given how easily these ballots can be faked, manipulated, or “lost in the mail.”
