| Read Online Friends, Yesterday, I asked you to start close to home by checking your own voter record. Today, I want you to meet someone who can tell you why that matters. Her name is Melissa Love, and she is one of the Detroit residents featured in Trapped: Detroit. She didn’t know until she looked. Then she took action. “I am the evidence,” Melissa said. “They stole my vote from me.” Think about discovering that your name was being used to cast votes you knew nothing about. Who requested those ballots? Whose signatures were on the paperwork? How could this happen without you knowing? Those questions deserve answers. Melissa deserves answers. And her story should make every one of us look at our own record — including people who don’t vote and don’t believe they are even registered. In Michigan and other automatic voter registration states, all social service programs, such as applying for or renewing a driver’s license, can also register an eligible person to vote unless they know to opt out. And someone who doesn’t know they are registered may never think to check what is being recorded in their name. We need to get this message to hundreds of thousands of people in Detroit and millions across the country. To the people who vote in every election, and to the people who say, “This doesn’t concern me. I don’t vote.” Please check anyway. And then — please vote.
